Re: Searching for good CA locations for ESL
Posted by lynne/ca on 5/12/08

You may need to take CTEL (California Teachers of English
Learners) coursework or pass the CTEL exam. See the link below
to look up whether your ESL certification from your current
staet meets the requirement (find your state in the list
beginning on page 3, then check the right-hand column to see
if your certification for ESL is listed there). If it's
listed, you're fine. If not, you'll need to earn your CTEL
certificate either through coursework or taking the exam.
To clarify, this document is a bit old and so it uses the old
name for the English Learner authorization (CLAD) although
it's now called CTEL (California Teachers of English
    Learners). They're the same thing.
Check out edjoin.org for your job search if you haven't
    already done so.
Also, it will help you to be aware that the term used in
California is not "ESL" (except sometimes for adult
education), but rather ELD (English Language Development).
When you're looking for jobs, look for ELD or EL. You won't
    find ESL listed.
