The great thing about GLAD is that it is a structure that you
can use for any subject. Students really get into the
interaction and develop their vocabulary skills. It does take
a lot of preparation time. I stopped making big books and
make powerpoint slide shows instead. With the slide shows, it
is easy to find pictures on the internet rather than flipping
through old magazines. Instead of reward cards, I give away
stickers that relate to the theme. Once you have a few
chants, you can use these over and over. Everything else
(input charts, organizers) is made with the students. If you
want to save time, don't predraw/sketch the input charts
ahead of time, just wing it. I don't photo copy anything for
the students, they make their own mini charts to match mine
with regular paper.
The hard part for me is implementing the whole program. I have
never had the luxury of implementing all of the components
for a unit. During training, I remember most sample units
being 6-8 weeks. If I stuck to a science or social studies
unit for this amount of time, I would never be able to cover
all of the CA standards!
